What is the meaning of the terms „ einfacher Dienst“, „mittlerer Dienst“, „gehobener Dienst“ and „höherer Dienst“?
These traditional terms belonging to the civil service law date back to prussian times.
Today, being more catchy than the official unwieldy terms, these terms still are used colloquially.

off.: „2. Laufbahngruppe, 1. Einstiegsamt in der 3. Qualifikationsebene“
Simplified expressed, all these terms can be characterized as follows:
Einfacher Dienst: simple tasks which can be done without professional qualification
Mittlerer Dienst: operational or administrative tasks; a completed final exam will be necessary.
Requirement for access to this kind of apprenticeship: Fachoberschulreife
